Purpose: To evaluate the postoperative changes of the type of intermittent exotropia.
Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 30 patients who underwent surgery for intermittent exotropia with postoperative follow-up of 6 months or more and were classified into types. The main outcome measure was the distribution of the type of intermittent exotropia at both pre- and post-operative 1, 3, 6 months.
Results: The mean age at surgery was 9.2 ¡¾ 6.6 years. The mean exodeviations were 26.9 ¡¾ 8.0 PD at distance and 26.8 ¡¾ 10.8 PD at near. Of 30 patients, 24 (80.0%) showed the basic type, 3 (10.0%) the pseudodivergence excess type, 3 (10.0%) the convergence insufficiency type. After surgery, most patients showed basic type at post-operative 1, 3, 6 months. Only 2 patients remained in the convergene insufficiency type at postoperative 6 months. There was no significant difference between surgical types for exotropia.
Conclusions: Most of intermittent exotropia changed to the basic type after the surgery. Preoperative convergence insufficiency type may be remained after surgery.
